Could you tell us more about your background: how did you first get into the world of fashion design? When did you realize you wanted to become a fashion designer?

I have always been into design but my career first started as an interaction designer and illustrator before I stepped into the fashion accessories industry. In 2003, I left Hong Kong to have my design study in Italy. This first trip to Europe brought me to a new world of art and design. In 2005, I moved to the Netherlands to start my design career and I am living here since then. But my love to handbag design started only after I met Vincci Law, the co-founder of Artessorio. She has been running a leather accessories manufacturing business for many years and I met her through a friend. Over the talk, I learned so much about the possibilities of using leather materials, the different techniques to create bags. And it is very different from the type of design I was doing. Handbag design is so much more hand-on. It is very intriguing to get back to do something tactile after working on digital design for years. And I started to think why not to apply what I learned in illustrative art to something more physical. Then, “Artessorio” was born. Artessorio is created from two words: “Arte” & “Accessorio” in Italian. The idea is to have art and accessories together, making our everyday handbag as portable gallery to carry Artessorio art around the world.

Could you tell us about your inspiration and your approach to design?

It is a difficult question to say where I find inspirations because inspirations come from anywhere. It is important to keep curiosity to see and discover things. I am a nature lover and I borrow a lot of ideas to create patterns from nature. I also love to travel and there’s a lot to discover, especially when you see how people with different cultures would handle the same thing in a completely different way. This inspires me how to use different eyes to approach design and come up with something unique from my perspective.

What made you decide to design bag?

It happened by chance but once I got into handbag design, I just had growing love and passion for it. There is so much you can do and it is a great accessory piece to make people happy.

What is the masterpiece of your collection? Can you tell us more about your inspiration when creating this piece?

I don’t think I can call it masterpiece. But I really love Floriana collection. The collection is all in black with sophisticated laser cut design. They are very simple in shape but very unique in the style. When you design in black with only one material, you really need to pay extra attention on details to make it beautiful but also different.

Who is the Artessorio targeted customer? What is their style?

We have customers from all over the world. They are women that are confident. Different from just dressing to please others, our customers dress to please themselves. That bold and brave attitude makes them all have unique and beautiful styles.

Does Artessorio reflect your personal style?

Absolutely. For me, I dress according to my mood and I don’t really have just a single style. Artessorio handbag is always in the right level to compliment the total look of the person using it. I am keen on designing something original as well as lasting. I like to keep balance between simplicity and details. This subtle elegancy makes it easy to mix and match Artessorio bags to create different look.

Can you share the most enjoyable part and most frustrating part of your work?

I really love the design process, starting from sketching on a blank paper and seeing the design materialize. There are also frustrations for sure. I love to use cut to design patterns on my bags and it’s not easy to handle as the result may differ a lot from different leathers. And it really takes time to try and see.

Besides handbag designer, what are your hobbies, what are youused to do in your leisure time?

I love to travel, especially to places with lots of nature. I also love to draw. When I draw, it gives me a moment to reflect myself.

Tell us more about your city: what do you like most / is unique about it? What is your favourite place / food / moment?

I am originally from Hong Kong but I have been living in Amsterdam for last 8 years. Hong Kong is a vibrant city. Once I am in Hong Kong, I feel full of energy. It has the atmosphere that wants you to get busy and go around to discover. Hong Kong is so dense that it’s very special to see how different things blend together to create the city’s character. I love the food from my home city. Wonton noodles and milk tea are two of the must-haves every time I go back home. Amsterdam is very different from Hong Kong. Wandering around the canals give me so much serenity. I like the raw and rustic design that you often find in Amsterdam. It makes me feel connected to nature and back to basic.

Can you give some tips or advices for young designers who are dreaming about starting their own brand?

I think being a designer should not forget that what we design is meant to be for others. Of course I design what I love, but my joy comes when I see people using my handbags. Staying true to what you believe is very important but at the same time, we should not forget to look around.

How would you mix it with your three other favorite accessories from Shop des Createurs and how would you match it with simple outfit of yours?

Shop des Créateurs is an amazing international talent pool. There is a fine selection of unique and creative design in this online shop. I like it that it has a very tastefully selected collection than just a massive number of things. It’s fun to browse and shop there. My latest favorite is the Paris / Cigar Sunglasses by Ross & Brown. It has a vintage chic style. What a great found!
