Many artists take part in this 4-night festival and light up buildings, streets and parks all over the city. Around 70 light-installations are set to create a magical and enchanting atmosphere. Other than light installations, there will be art performances, music and other offerings which are bound to cater to different tastes.

The event usually gathers around 4 million visitors from France and abroad and runs from 6 p.m until 1 a.m. A competition has been held for the past several years, where the audience chooses their favourite and the winner gets crowned with the Trophée des Lumières (Light Trophy).

This festival takes its origins from a religious tradition. In 1852, the city of Lyon was about to celebrate the installation of a statue of the Virgin Mary, but the event had to be cancelled as the River Saône was overflowing. Festivities were then postponed to December 8th. On that day, there was a violent storm and the event had to be abandoned once again! However, as the night came, the weather became better and clearer, so people spontaneously started to lit their homes with candles and Bengal lights, all the while hurrying down the streets to celebrate the occasaion with the community.

The ritual has been repeated and expanded every single year, until the last 10 years when the event has transformed into a world-class event offering an outstanding urban light show and many other installations. It is now one of the city and France's major festivals which attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists every year.
